Our Founder

Don Murray

1922 - 2002

Don Murray and his business partner started M & M Drilling in 1950. The company started as a seismic drilling company working in Northern Alberta, during the spring thaw the company would drill water wells back at home. Eventually Don bought out his partner and became the sole owner of M & M Drilling and the company began to focus more on water well drilling. Don became well known for doing whatever it took to find water for his customers. No matter what the time of day if someone had pump problems Don would take care of it. Many customers would be surprised as Don flew his plane to a customer place to fix a problem. Don was a major force in water well drilling in Alberta and was often involved in the Alberta Water Well Association as a director.

Don loved to try out new ways of getting the job done and M & M was noted as an innovator due to his efforts. As an employee who worked with Don, to me he was larger than life and a personal role model. He treated us all like we were part of the family, took a personal interest in all of us. Even when there were problems he always kept his cool and had a smile on his face. All of us can remember when we were drilling, if we didn't find water, we'd look back at Don and he would be pointing down to the ground, telling us to try one more rod. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't, but Don was always willing to go just a little further. Everyone knew Don and when you saw him driving down the road, two things were unmistakable. Don in a rush to get to the site and Texas (his dog) in the truck box. If a man is remembered for all he did, then Don will never be forgot. We miss Don a great deal, but we hope that we are carrying on with the same determined spirit that he showed every day of his life.
