M & M has been family-owned and operated since 1952. From our location in Strathmore, Alberta, we are able to serve all areas in Alberta, Southwestern Saskatchewan, and Southeastern British Columbia. The quality of our services is a result of our extensive history and dedicated staff. We are also proud of the contributions to the community we have made for over 65 years.

Early Years

The company’s early beginning started in the seismic industry during the winter of 1949/1950; Don Murray got his start in the industry by working a Franks rig for M & W Drilling, which was owned by John Mundell and Hank Webster. Several years later, Don purchased Hank’s share in the company and also purchased a new Mayhew rig. M & M Drilling became incorporated in 1956. Two years later, John Mundell retired and sold his shares to Don.

In the beginning, M & M Drilling served the seismic industry in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. Locations include Fort St. John and Fort Nelson, British Columbia, Fort McMurray, Del Bonita, Grande Prairie, Sexsmith, Bashaw, Stettler, Wetaskiwin, Big Valley, Crowsnest Pass, Rainbow Lake, Zama Lake, Consort, Lesser Slave Lake, Alberta, Bengough, Weyburn Saskatchewan, and many more.

During these years, M & M Drilling provided services to Weiss Geophysical, Amerada Petroleum, Beaver Geophysical, Century Geophysical, Teledyne and Compagnie Generale de Geophysique.

Entry into the Water Well Industry

In the mid-1960s, we became more focused on the water well drilling industry and purchased two new Failing rigs. Our business also expanded to include sales and installations of pressure systems, pumps, and later water treatment systems.

Past specialty drilling projects included the construction of a series of high-capacity wells in Finnegan, Alberta to de-water river gravel for use at the Alberta Power Sheerness power plan water intake site. Prior to the construction of the new CP Rail tunnel, M & M took part in exploration drilling in the Rogers Pass area. Our team has also drilled surface holes for oil and gas well production, as well as cathodic protection drilling for gas plants and pipelines.

About Our Founder, Don Murray (1922 – 2002)

Don Murray and his business partner began M & M Drilling in 1950. The company started as a seismic drilling company working in Northern Alberta and during the spring thaw the company would drill water wells back home. Eventually Don bought out his partner and became the sole owner of M & M Drilling and the company began to focus more on water well drilling. Don became well known for doing whatever it took to find water for his customers. No matter what the time of day if someone had pump problems Don would take care of it. Many customers would be surprised as Don flew his plane to a customer’s place to fix a problem. Don was a major force in water well drilling in Alberta and was involved in the Alberta Water Well Association as a director.

Don loved to try out new ways of getting the job done and M & M was noted as an innovator due to his efforts. Everyone knew Don and when you saw him driving down the road, two things were unmistakable: Don in a rush to get to the job site and his dog, Texas in the truck box.

In 2002, Don passed away and the company ownership was turned over to Bill Murray and his wife, Jeannette.

In 2017, Vincent and Stacy, the third generation, incorporated M&M DRILLING Inc. It is their intent to provide the same excellent standard of services that has been experienced over the last 60 years.

Community Involvement

M & M is involved with numerous local events, including parades and fundraisers. For the Strathmore Cancer Walk for Life, we are known as “Lyle’s Drillers,” in honor of a friend and former driller who lost his battle with cancer. We regularly enter (and sometimes win) the Strathmore Heritage Days Parade float competition. M & M also supports other local causes and activities, including 4H, Relay for Life (for the Cancer Society), Strathmore Lion’s auction, the Hope Foundation, local high school rodeo, Wheatland & District Food Bank, and the Wheatland Community Crisis Shelter.

In recent years M & M has supported the community through various environmental disasters such as the 2013 High River Flood 2017 Siksika Flood and the 2018 grass fires by providing volunteer crews, donated services and fundraising efforts.
